Jujutsu is one of the oldest Japanese martial arts, dating back over 1200 years, traditionally used in hand to hand combat and later adopted for self-defence. Many believe that Jujutsu is based primarily on joint locks, grappling and ground fighting, but traditional Jujutsu is different in that it teaches the foundations to apply these locks, grapples, and most importantly "atemi" (the strike). Yoshin Ryu incorporates all of these techniques into a rich system aimed at cultivating spirit, compassion, strength and skill.

Jujutsu flourished in the fifteenth and sixteenth century in Japan, when thousands of styles were developed, tested and refined in training and on the battlefield. Samurai warriors were equipped with weapons such as swords, but if disarmed they still needed to be able to fight. This situation emphasized the need for various styles of Jujutsu that addressed both armoured and un-armoured opponents using various weapons. Kai Sensei, our founder, refined these well tested techniques from styles he had mastered, such as Bokuden Ryu and Asayama Ichiden Ryu, into a style that became named Yoshin Ryu by Shioda Gozo Sensei (founder of Yoshinkan Aikido), one of Kai Sensei’s teachers.

Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu is taught in a traditional manner at the Dojo, where students practice solo ‘kata’, formal paired forms and work with partners on all techniques. Basics such as strikes, blocks, footwork and tumbling are often practiced and techniques taught in any given class may also include grappling, groundwork and weapons. The foundations of Yoshin Ryu, however, are the stances and roundness inherent to all traditional Japanese martial arts, and the ability to apply the core techniques to control and immobilize your opponent by directing your own balance, concentration and skill. You will learn how to ‘feel out’ your opponent and apply the needed amount of force – an ability which requires skill, respect, discipline and awareness.
