Seibukan Traditional Martial Arts

The influences on Yoshin Ryu Kenjutsu come from Kai Sensei’s study of Asayama Ichiden Ryu, Bokuden Ryu, Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu, and Mugai Ryu Iaiheido. The basics of Yoshin Ryu are also firmly placed in Yoshinkan Aiki-Kenjutsu basics. Kai Sensei combined these various styles in his wish to develop an all-encompassing Kenjutsu with sound foundations and the goal of transmitting not only the techniques, but also the true spirit of Budo and the cultivation of heart and mind.
Yoshin Ryu encompasses five stances and eight cuts to start, but cutting techniques are further advanced through finesse and the precise, circular motions utilized by the practitioner. Japanese swordsmanship contains universal principles that are applied throughout a diverse number of martial systems, such as Aikido, Jujutsu, or Jodo, just to name a few. As dedicated students advance, principles and techniques beyond the basics are revealed over time. Using bokken (traditional wooden practice swords), classes are taught in a formal and challenging manner comprising of drills, solo and paired forms. The formal class structure reflects the seriousness and concentration required for learning Kenjutsu, but compassion for the well-being of students is the first priority.
Yoshin Ryu Kenjutsu stresses the importance of proper stances, balance and roundness, or fluid and circular motions for the beginning student. As the student advances and the foundations are learned, influence from older styles (Koryu) become more apparent and Yoshin Ryu Kenjutsu focuses on specific techniques adapted to its guiding principles, including short-sword and countering techniques.
